In my opinion, the talent management mentor is like what I call in my culture as “Mbok Emban”. In old Javanes culture we know “Mbok Emban” as a part of a family. Espaecially in royal family. The Queen or the wife of a King usually did not raise their kids by herself to become a King or Prince or Princess. Especially if the King’s children did not come from the first wife or from the second or other wives. To ensure that all the King’s children is raised to become a minimum quality standard of prince or princess, there is a person, ussually an old woman, who are specialist to raise the King’s children to become a prince or princess. So when this King’s children is mature they are ready to be offered to the King or Kingdom to inherit the throne or to be assigned to lead or to become smaller king in one of the area of the main Kingdom.

Mountain Biking in Jatiasih Track Bekasi, West Java

This evening I am feeling ”do-not-want to-move” after got up of a long sleep this afternoon. I was so physically tired after finishing mountain bike in Jatiasih track this morning. Even I feel physically tired but I feel good psychologically, and just enjoying Saturday night at home with my family.

This Saturday morning, 23 October 2011, was the first time for me to try the mountain bike in Jatiasih track. If you ask me more detail about Jatiasih mountain bike track, I will refer you to this site or site.

Several days ago I received an email from office colleague to join the Petrobike mountain bike event in Jatiasih track in Bekasi. I agreed to join and this was the first time also I join a Petrobike event. This Petrobike event was hosted by my company and CNOOC.

I started from my home at 6 in the morning. My driver put my bike on the car bike rack and we went to the Jatiasih Track. I arrived at the Jalur Jatiasih (JJ) base camp around 7 AM. There was so many participant already there. They were from various oil company in Jakarta as they are members of the Petrobike community. This event was the 19th anniversary of the Petrobikers community.

My Recruitment Strategy Toward Talent Management

I have been more than 6 years in this company. This is an Oil and Gas Exploration Production Company in Indonesia. When I joined this company in year 2005, I was established as as geophysics and geology manager in one of the asset or business unit of this company. One of the duty, maybe unwritten duty, in this position was to develop a strong petroleum geoscience organization or department.

After 3 years in my position, I got a more responsibility not only a manager of geophysics and geology division manager but then I was established as Vice President of Exploration in this Business Unit or Asset. Again, one of the duty or responsibility was to develop a strongth petroleum geoscientist organization. This duty continue until I was established as Head of Geosciences in the end 2010 of this company that oversee all petroleum geosciences business of this company across all business unit or petroleum assets.

It is fortunate for me that I like working on people development, so I have a passion on developing and strengthening the petroleum geosciences organization for this company.

It was not easy to build an exploration organization. This company has a unique character and situation. This is a mature asset. The exploration and development can not be separated. The Geology and Geophysics Manager had to able to integrate not only the geology and geophysics to construct a subsurface model but also to integrate exploration and development thinking.

Myanmar A-6 Block Review

It was in the morning time in my office when I was a little bit surprised as I read my email trail. Actually sudden surprise like this almost happen in everyday life. The Partner representative was in town and they were in our office. Apparently the night before, one of the Partner representative emailed me that they wanted to see the progress Myanmar A-6 block review that they given us to review by my team.

It was like a sudden to me, since my team is still reviewing the data and one of my team member was borrowed by other unit to attend a meeting with BPMIGAS about the POD approval process. I coordinated my team to prepare the progress.

When I meet with the Partner Reps, actually they wanted to be updated the progress but they also and always urge me to give a confirmation about the prospectivity of this block. Even they asked my personal guts and opinion since I said that my team has not concluded the review yet. Well, with the current data available we have and our current understanding which is still progressing, the block appear to be high risk.

I said them my team consist of three geoscientist. One reviewing the regional petroleum geology, one reviewing the well data and another one is reviewing the 3D seismic volume. The review on 3D seismic volume will a bit time consume since we have to pick the horizon. The interpretation horizon was not available on the data package.

Assignment on Talent Management

One of my colleague who assigned as a talent management mentor started working on this job. He reported by email to relevant party, mainly the HRD, that he got a bit un-smooth process in his job that might be due to not sufficient communication between the mentee ( a person that is being mentored ), the division manager, the general manager and the HRD with the mentors. Well then let us have a coordination meeting to evaluate the progress.

A new assignment was given to me in May 2011. I was assigned as a mentor of Talent Management program in my company. Although talent management has been around for relatively a long time in the industry, actually I guess, my company just started to implement.

Apparently my company had a series of several meeting before launching the Talent Management program. Our Board of Director had requested the Human Resources Department make our company implement and engaged to talent management program. About talent management program, you and every reader has known a lot or you can googlle search about talent management. So many article about talent management in the internet, that is what I mean that this talent management is not quite new to the industry.

It seemed that my company HRD has done some action on talent management before the launching date by BOD in July 2011. They have made the talent pool selection via an assessment center. They reviewed the candidate performance appraisal and they consulted with the respective General Manager of the Business Unit.

For me assignment as one of the Talent Management mentor is interesting job since I got a passion in people development and strategic management even though I have very limited time as a Chief of Geosciences of this large national petroleum company.

This afternoon, I got a chance to swim. It is my favorit and allowable spor to do. I have been almost three weeks stop from swimming due to long holiday of Iedul Fitri and my assignment to Bangkok.

Ussually I almost every afternoon do swimming after office hour in Elite club in Rasuna Epicentrum complex. I have been more than three month become a member of this club with my wife.

Being so long not doing sport of swimming, I feel gaining more weight and less fitness. Also, I do not get enough good sleep. I hope tonight I can have a good sleep.

The Book of ” AFTERSCHOCK” by Philippe Legrain

We were in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. The day was Thursday 8 September 2011. We took Garuda flight that would take off 17:10 hours, the GA-869. I was with my wife. I and my colleagues have recently completed the task to evaluate the block in Bangkok, precisely in the office PTTEPI. While we were waiting for boarding on the plane I and my wife walked in the terminal waiting room. Still exist in our pockets, the remaining money of 750 Baht Thai Baht. We were walking up and down looking in shops at the airport that we could buy. My wife wanted to buy more presents for friends in Jakarta who is good enough for baht money we had. After back and forth we did not find souvenir items that cost750 Baht, I went to the bookstore.

At the bookstore was a lot of books on Buddhism that was good and interesting to buy, but I was more interested in a book on international financial analysis written by Philippe Legrain. It’s called Aftershock, Reshaping the world economy after the crisis. On the cover it was written ’A blueprint for a new world economic order - the Sunday Times’. Of course this is interesting! I open the cover and read at a glance some of the chapters of the book, it was interesting.. hmmm … the style is very popular language to tell about the origins of the world economic crisis in 2008 which has just passed and the future direction and advice.

I then told my wife, if we could not find a gift worth of Baht 750, I wanted to buy this book. The price was 545 baht. I thought this a good book. After I guaranteed that I will read this book, my wife finally bought me this book.

In the mid of my trip to Sukabumi, Saturday 20 August 2011, I got a call from a member the Board Of Director ( BOD ), if I could go to Bangkok and then to Myanmar with one of my geologist for the data room evaluation of the block, on August 30, 2011. I said that I was ready, but the geologist may not be ready because of about Lebaran holiday . And it is true, my geologist already had a reservation for a family home Lebaran and would be back on September 2, 2011. So I had to negotiate with the BOD in order to go to the data room in Bangkok after 3 Sptember 2011.

Tuesday 22 September 2011, I was assure that the data room could be postponed until September 5, 2011, but we had a meeting in Bangkok on Sunday 4 September 2011 in Bangkok. So we had to go to Bangkok on the 3rd of September 201.So we could all go home and spend Iedul Fitri holidays .

For this time the data room was a consortium of several companies investors in Asia. They were from China and Indonesia. They are based in Beijing, Hongkong, Bangkok, Singapore and Jakarta. Our Company must provide geologist, geophysicist, petroleum engineer and a financial modeler. While they provide expert drilling, project management and geological consultant with local knowledge.

The block of which we will evaluate is in offshore Gulf of Martaban in the Andaman Sea in the north of Moattama basin, in the offshore area of Burma or Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE). The block is operated by the Thai national oil company PTTEPI.

We begin to prepare our tickets, booked the hotels in Bangkok and cash advance of money. We booekd the Sofitel Centara Grand Phaholyotin Hotel in Bangkok. It is close to the office where we will perform the data room in PTTEPI office .

After all preaparation was ready we all could go to tour home town for celebrating the Iedul Fitri and we planned to fly to Bangkok on Saturday September 3, 2011.
